Collaborative Poem Draft Due

The Collaborative Poem

Watch these video performances: (Choose 3 and in the COMMENT section of this blog post, please evaluate and rank your top 3 favorite poems from the list. Which poem is strongest in its performance/concept/creativity, etc. Which poem moves you or makes you think most? Etc. Make sure you defend your ranking by explaining why you ordered the top three poems this way...)
Collaborative Poem Project:

1. Get into your groups of 2, 3, or 4. Again, no one should work alone for this project.

2. You should have decided on a topic or theme for your poem. As most collaborative slam poetry, it might be easiest to agree on a political or social problem that you are all concerned with. If you have new ideas, present/communicate them to the group.

3. The rules:
A. All group members must speak.
B. All group members must contribute to the poem in some significant way.
C. Help each other.
D. Include gestures and "blocking" for your performance. Decide how you will move, what will you do with your body, what tone you will use in your voice, how this tone will change, what facial expressions you will make, how you will change your pitch, pace, and rhythm, etc.
You may find it helpful to first come up with a response line or choral line: a repeated line that all group members recite together or at different times to cue your group members as to where you are in the poem. Write the draft of the poem together first. Once you have a draft, print out enough copies for each of your members, then gather to practice and block the performance.

This project draft is due by the end of class. If you finish early, please begin rehearsing and memorizing your poem.

At the end of period 4, we will be going to the library to pick up and select our second poetry chapbook. Please begin reading the collection.

HOMEWORK: Choose one poet from this linked list and read/watch/listen to these poems.

1) Date my Mom - Melissa Lozado-Oliva & Jonathan Mendoza
- This one is my favorite out of the four because it shows the most energy and passion for the piece presented. Its message was strong too. Combined with the good acting and premise, it was a really compelling performance.
2) Grinding - (collaborative poem performance)
- This also had a lot of energy and choreography. I respect the effort put into this performance.
3) Note to Self - Terisa Siagatonu
- It was about body appreciation and acknowledgement, something that can really pull in the audience if they have issues with their own body. The sincerity in her voice was also nice to hear in the performance, which really made it shine.

1} Date My Mom - Melissa Lozado-Oliva & Jonathan Mendoza
This is my favorite poem because they had a lot of metaphors and comparisons. Also, the poem was very powerful in a sense to say that women could do anything they want to because they're strong enough.
2} Grinding- (collaborative poem piece)
This poem had a lot of energy and it was also very humorous, but I highly respect the effort.
3} Note TO Self - Terisa Siagatonu
I liked Note To Self because it had sent a message saying that women go through more than just appearances when they're out and about in society.

My top three favorite poems from the list are Note to Self by Terisa Siagatonu, Neverland by Sam Rush, and Grinding (collaborative poem performance). The poem that was strongest in its concept, performance, and creativity, and the poem that made me think the most was Note to Self. I say this because the poem speaks of how women should not feel that they shouldn't be able to treat themselves how they wish simply because of society's ideals for them and how they should behave. I ordered my top three favorite poems how I did based on how meaningful each of the poems was to me.

My top three favorite poems were Neverland by Sam Rush, Grinding by a group of people and Date My Mom by Melissa Lozado-Olivia and Johnathan Mendoza because they were all well preformed with good enthusiasm and well written. My favorite poem was Grinding because it showed that you shouldn't care what people think and how people judge you. My second favorite was Date My Mom because the two people explained how cool their mothers are. My third favorite was Neverland because the way the women read the poem made it entertaining to watch.

My top three poems in order from favorite to least favorite are Note to Self by Terisa Siagatonu, Neverland by Sam Rush, and Grinding by Jonathan Mendoza, Janae Johnson, Melissa Lozada-Oliva and Erich Haygun. My favorite was Note to Self because out of all of the poems it seemed to have the most serious and emotional topic and reading. My second favorite was Neverland because I enjoyed the extended metaphor of using the world of Peter Pan to create a slam poem. My third favorite was Grinding because the speakers were very vibrant and their actions went along with their poem very well.

My top 3 poems from the list were Note to Self by Terisa Siagatonu, Neverland by Sam Rush, and Grinding a collaborative poem performance. I ranked Note to Self #1 because of the topic; I could relate to the topic which was talking about women being uncomfortable with men because of their depiction of what looks good and being queer because of it, and it made me more intrigued with the performance. I ranked Neverland #2 because the woman's expression made the performance entertaining. Last but not least I ranked Grinding #3 because they were dancing and looked like they were having fun with their performance so they weren't just reading a poem there was action which made it fun to watch.

My top choice from the three performances is, Note to Self by Terisa Siagatonu. I found such a significant meaning behind it, about loving your body and being confident in your body; and she spoke with such passion and ferocity that made it so compelling to watch. My next choice was Neverland by Sam Rush. I found her piece deep and symbolic with multiple ways to interpret it, and her emotion and her dramatics was up to par. My final choice was Date My Mom by Melissa Lozado-Oliva & Jonathan Mendoza. It was comedic, but had its moments. Both poets read with a projected voice and much expression, making it amusing to watch.

My top three poems were Neverland, Grinding, and Date my Mom. Neverland by Sam Rush is in third because of it's allusion to being a lost boy. At times I feel lost, not necessarily the way Sam means it, but lost as to who I am as a person. Grinding is in second because the comedy aspect. I loved how all of the poets in this collaborative poem were equally bringing the same energy and passion. The gestures made it funnier. Date my Mom is in first because this one was everything. The mom, Melissa Lozado-Oliva & Jonathan Mendoza, were describing sounds like my mom and makes funnier.

My top three favorite poems from the list were Note to Self by Terisa Siagatonu, grinding a collaborative poem performance, and Date my Mom by Mellisa and Johnathan. The poem that was the strongest to me was note to self. i think this because it really made me think about my decisions now and in the future, it made me think about my thought out plans and if i should go through with them. the second one was Date my Mom because it basically explains how strong moms are and how independent they are. Moms don't need any man to take care of them and their problems. The last one to me was Grinding because it tells all the kids that are self conscious that as long as you do you and continue to be strong no one has the right to come at you( self empowerment).

I picked Neverland because I thought it was going to be interesting and when I listened to it the lady used appropriate hand gestures and her voice carried.

I picked note to self because I thought it might of related to me in a way but it was encouraging.

I picked Grinding because it was a collaborative poem and it was funny and well rehearsed.

I rank the top three as Neverland by Sam Rush at number one. Note to self by Terisa Siagatonu at number two and Date my mom by Melissa Lozado-Oliva and Johnathan Mendoza at number three. I ranked Date My Mom at three because it had an interesting topic but i felt it was lost a lot of the time and a little confusing but it was still really entertaining. I ranked Note to self at number two because it was very strong but i didn't find as entertaining to watch. I ranked Neverland at one because it had both qualities it was an amazing and stron topic that was clear but it also had a slight dramatic and entertaining factor that made it fun to watch.

1) Date My Mom! : Funny, personal. This was my favorite because it was nice to listen to the misadventures of a mom, and the loving words of a caring child who cares. I liked the physical presence of the performers.

2) Note To Self: A poem about confidence in the queer sexuality, and being okay with experimenting. Self confidence.

3) Neverland: I wasn't sure if this was a recall of a childhood of a transgender because she said when I was a boy, but anyways. A nice poem about The insecurity of your new found identity and questioning yourself.
